Everything you need to build on Canton.

Starting from zero? Follow the steps in order. Already experienced? Jump straight to the tools, SDKs and grant information. If you get stuck, ask the HackTrail Assistant.

Getting started

Your first Canton app in four steps

  1. Get to know Canton

    Canton's privacy model, parties and how synchronization works.

  2. Learn Daml

    Daml, Canton's smart contract language: templates, signatories, observers and choices.

  3. Run the Quickstart

    Bring up a complete Canton application locally with a few commands.

  4. Connect Loop Wallet

    Let your users sign transactions with Loop Wallet, the official HackTrail wallet.

Quickstart

Set up your local environment in a few commands

The Canton Network Quickstart runs Canton, Daml and a sample application locally on Docker. First install the prerequisites from the official guide (Docker, direnv and so on), then:

cn-quickstart — zsh
$ git clone https://github.com/digital-asset/cn-quickstart.git
$ cd cn-quickstart
$ direnv allow
$ cd quickstart
$ make setup # configure the environment
$ make build # build the application
$ make start # start the Canton services

We recommend allocating at least 8 GB of memory to Docker. Run make help to list all targets.

Official wallet

Connect with Loop Wallet

The Loop SDK lets your dApp connect to a Loop account. Users sign transactions in Loop Wallet on mobile or in the browser, and the whole interaction stays inside your dApp.

app.js
// npm install @fivenorth/loop-sdk
import { loop } from '@fivenorth/loop-sdk';

loop.init({
  appName: 'HackTrail dApp',
  network: 'devnet', // 'local' | 'devnet' | 'mainnet'
  onAccept: (provider) => console.log(provider.party_id),
  onReject: () => console.log('rejected'),
});

loop.connect(); // opens the connection window with a QR code
